Manistee Fall Color Tours: Scenic Drives & Photo Stops You’ll Love This Fall

If you’ve never been to Manistee in the fall, you’re in for something special. The trees light up with fiery reds and golds, the air turns crisp (but not cold), and every drive feels like you’ve stepped into a Pure Michigan postcard.

This time of year is hands-down my favorite in northern Michigan. Whether you love road trips, photography, or just slowing down for a weekend getaway, Manistee County is one of the best places to see fall colors in Michigan — and the perfect spot to make a few new fall memories.

TWO LOOPS, ENDLESS VIEWS

One of the coolest things about Manistee is that we get two fall color seasons. The area has two official Fall Color Loops that stretch through forest, coastline, and charming small towns.

🍁 The Inland Loop

The Inland Loop is about 180 miles of hardwood forest roads, scenic bridges, and quiet trails that wrap around the Manistee National Forest. The colors here usually peak a week or so earlier than the coast, so early October is prime time.

You’ll drive through cozy little towns and tree tunnels that feel straight out of a movie. Don’t miss a stop at Iron Fish Distillery in Thompsonville for a bourbon flight or warm cider cocktail — it’s one of those “can’t skip” spots.

If you’re more of a cider and wine fan, Northern Natural Cider House & Winery in Kaleva is another must. They use local heirloom apples, and their outdoor space is perfect on a sunny fall afternoon.

Oh, and for something totally unique — stop at the G&D Alpaca Farm. They have an adorable gourd tunnel, a little shop, and (you guessed it) alpacas. It’s one of those places that’s impossible to leave without a smile.

🌊 The Coastal Loop

If you’re after those iconic Lake Michigan views, the Coastal Loop is your drive. Starting right in downtown Manistee (the gateway to M-22), this 225-mile route hugs the shoreline through Onekama, Arcadia, and Frankfort — and continues north toward Sleeping Bear Dunes, which was actually voted the Most Beautiful Place in America.

Here’s the move:

  • Pull off at Arcadia Scenic Overlook (“Inspiration Point”) and climb the 120 steps. It’s a workout, but the view is pure magic.

  • Walk the Manistee Riverwalk — two miles of color, shops, and coffee stops along the water.

  • Grab a local beer at North Channel Brewing Company and watch freighters move through the channel.

You can make this drive in a day, but honestly, I’d give it two. The pace is slower, the views are constant, and there’s no shortage of spots to pull over for photos.

📸 Picture-Perfect Stops

There’s no shortage of places to stop and snap a few photos — but a few spots top the list every year:

  • Manistee Riverwalk (Downtown) – a 2-mile boardwalk that glows with color.

  • Suspension Bridge (off Upper River Road) – short hike, amazing view.

  • Arcadia Scenic Overlook – the photo every fall traveler wants.

  • Manistee National Forest – endless trails, vibrant color.

  • Manistee River Trail Loop – for the adventurous (and the 4WD crowd).
